Planning

Each Mighty Mites photo session begins with an end product in mind.  Got a bare wall begging for decoration?  Need a birthday gift for Nana?  Is Christmas crunch time coming up and you just want someone else to deal with designing your card this year?  We'll start your project with a phone call (or txt or WhatsApp or email) to determine your goals.

It's all about style

Your artwork should complement its surroundings.  So we may choose a light and airy look for newborn photos meant to grace a nursery, whereas a bold black-and-white print would be right for a sophisticated minimalist living room wall.  A posed family portrait might look perfect for the front of a holiday card, but a framed selection of candid captures will reflect the energy of a busy playroom.  I can capture images for more than one style in a single shoot: for example, we can begin with some posed portraits in front of a backdrop, then run off to frolic in the backyard or watch the kids jump in the pool.  Explore some examples of my favorite shooting and editing styles.

where and when

The phrase "spoiled for choice" could have been invented for Bermuda: there are just too many gorgeous locations to name!  I love to shoot family sessions in the morning, when the light is soft and dreamy and doesn't hurt little eyes, and the kids are fresh and full of energy.  Parks and beaches offer fabulous and lush backdrops, but some of my favorite images are created on porches, in gardens, or on the back steps.

For newborns, I prefer to photograph them at my home in Smiths, where I have excellent natural light and all of my backdrops and blankets ready to work with.  Plus, I will start cranking up my heater a few hours in advance so that baby stays warm and cozy.  I am also available to capture those precious first few hours of life in a "Fresh 48" session at the hospital or your home.

...and what to wear

Like the rest of your session, what you wear will be dependent on what you want your final product to look like.  But here are some tips to get you started:

  • Wear clothes that fit well and feel good on (too tight will create unflattering wrinkles, and too big will look sloppy)
  • Solid color and simple prints are great
  • Families/siblings should follow a color scheme but NOT actually match each other
  • What's a color scheme?!  Just a set of colors that will be present in most of your clothes.  An easy way to start is to pick a favorite print (plaid, floral, doesn't even matter if you're planning to wear it in our session) and choose the colors out of that.  See some examples HERE
  • Avoid words, characters, logos, and large graphics
  • Avoid neon color close to the face (they can create odd color casts on the skin)
  • Layers and texture add fabulous depth to photographs!
  • Finish your look or add a pop of color with shoes, jewelry, hats, scarves, hair accessories, or even a favorite small toy or other prop
